Architecture

The Ryzen 9 5900X was released with “Zen 3” architecture by AMD, and the Core i7-12700K has Intel’s “Alder Lake” architecture. Both these architectures are penultimate of the latest architectures of respective companies.

Also Read: Core i7-12700K vs. Core i5-12600K

The AMD Zen 3 architecture significantly improves upon the Zen 2 architecture. The major improvement is the switch to a new 7nm technology, which enables faster clock rates and more effective power use. Other enhancements to Zen 3 include a larger L3 cache and greater I/O performance.

Overall, these improvements make the Zen 3 CPUs far faster than their forerunners, making them an excellent choice for gamers and other power users. And the latest Zen 4 further improves all of these things.

The successor of the Intel Comet Lake, the Intel Alder Lake CPU microarchitecture was initially shown in 2021 and is based on the same 10 nm fabrication technology. This hybrid architecture combines both high-performance and high-efficiency cores on a single die.

The single die enables a more balanced approach to power and performance. Intel Raptor Lake, the newest architecture, has improved performance and efficiency.

CPU Socket

Intel launched the Core i7-12700K with an FCLGA1700 socket, and AMD launched the Ryzen 9 5900X with its AM4 socket. Also, read our guide on AM4 vs. AM5 sockets to know about the latest upgrades in AMD sockets.

The FCLGA1700 is a socket LGA-1700 compatible CPU socket for Intel’s 10nm Tiger Lake-S, Alder Lake, and Raptor Lake CPUs. The socket has 1700 pins and can accommodate up to four channels of DDR4-3200 memory. The Xe graphics architecture from Intel is also supported by the FCLGA1700.

AMD uses the AM4 socket to house its Ryzen and Threadripper processors. It was introduced in September 2016  and intended to replace the prior AM3+ socket. AMD’s first, second, and third-generation Ryzen CPUs and its second and generation Threadripper processors are compatible with the AM4 socket, which has 1331 pins. AMD’s A-Series and Athlon CPUs are also compatible with AM4.

Memory

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900X supports only DDR4 type of memory, and it comes with 128GB storage. However, the Intel Core i7-12700K supports both DDR4 and DDR5 types of memory, and it also comes with 128GB storage. Check out our guide on DDR4 vs. DDR5 for a better comparison.

The DDR5 memory speed of Intel Core i7-12700K of up to 4800 MT/s is faster than the DDR4 memory of R9 5900X having a speed of up to 3200 MT/s. If we compare the memory bandwidth of the two, the 76.8 GB/s bandwidth of Core i7-12700K is greater than 47.68 GB/s of AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.

The support of DDR5 is a great advantage of Core i7-12700K because the DDR4 is a bit outdated. The memory of the Ryzen 9 5900X would be slower and less efficient than the Intel Core i7-12700K.

Integrated Graphics

A CPU having integrated graphics is much preferable for people as it can deliver better performance in stressful tasks compared to a similar specced CPU without integrated graphics. The Core i7-12700K comes with Intel UHD Graphics 770, while the Ryzen 9 5900X does not offer integrated graphics.

The Intel UHD Graphics 770 is a powerful graphics processor that delivers stunning visuals and performance. It is based on the Intel HD Graphics architecture and features 128 shader cores, 48 texture units, and 32 ROPs. The clock speeds are also amazing, with a base clock of 1200 MHz and a boost clock of 1750 MHz. This results in a very smooth and responsive gaming experience, even at high resolutions. In addition, the Intel® UHD Graphics 770 also supports 4K resolution, making it ideal for gaming and other demanding applications.

While the Intel Core i7-12700K can deliver better performance in stressful conditions, even if the PC does not have any dedicated GPU, a dedicated graphics card would be required for AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Read our guides on dedicated graphics cards to better choose a GPU for R9 5900X.

The graph bars indicate that at gaming 1080p resolution, the Intel Core i7-12700K dominated the competition of Intel i7-12700K vs. R9 5900X.

The main (average) frame rates delivered by Core i7-12700K were 171.8 FPS, while for the Ryzen 9 5900X, the mean average FPS was calculated to be 157.8 FPS. These outcomes show that the Intel Core i7-12700K had ~8.9% overall higher performance.

If we see the two processors’ averaged minimum frame rates, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU had substantially lower minimum frame rates. The average minimum of Core i7-12700K is 52.6 FPS, while that of Ryzen 9 5900X was 46.2 FPS.

The maximum frame rates also followed the same trend. The 260 average maximum FPS of Core i7-12700K is 30 FPS higher than the 229.4 FPS average max delivered by the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.

All these frame rates indicate that at 1080p, the performance delivered by both CPUs was wonderful. The frame rates provided by R9 5900X are also superb for gaming at 1080p resolution. However, in terms of relative performance, the Intel Core i7-12700K deserves to be declared the winner, as predicted by the above graph.

At 1440p

The gaming performance of the Ryzen 9 5900X and Core i7-12700K  was almost the same when played at 1440p resolution.

Overall frame rates at 1440p

The average frame rate turned over by the Core i7-12700K was 96 FPS, while that of the Ryzen 9 5900X was 95.6 FPS. The overall difference is only 0.4 FPS. However, the max frame rate achieved by the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X was higher. The average highest FPS made by the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X was 158.2 FPS compared to 152.8 FPS by Core i7-12700K. The minimum frame rates of Core i7-12700K vs. R9 5900X were 38.8 and 37.4 FPS, respectively.

Compared to the Ryzen 9 5900X and Core i7-12700K performance at 1080p resolutions, their frame rates are lower at 1440p because the 1440p resolution demands higher capabilities. However, If we analyze the performance of two CPUs at 1440p gaming, both processors performed effectively. Their performance is sufficient for this resolution.

Frame Time

The frame time is related to the frame rate (FPS) with an inverse relation. The lower frame time improves the gaming efficiency of a CPU.

At 1080p

frame time
