With two power classes of Dark Power Pro 13 1300W and 1600W, complete ATX 3.0 compatibility with next-generation latest GPUs with PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR connectors, this next-generation of the already outstanding Dark Power Pro 12 series offers a future-proof option for upgrading your system.

be quiet!’s portfolio has long been a source of great pride for the company, representing the technical excellence of its engineers and the greatest specs they could come up with. Consequently, this level of technical precision has not only resulted in long-lasting PSUs but also in a platform that can withstand the rigorous power delivery standards set by ATX 3.0. As a consequence of these improvements, the Dark Power Pro 13 1300W, the newest model in the series, is what I am reviewing today.

While maintaining the 80Plus Titanium certification and outstanding features of the previous generation, the thirteenth version of be quiet!’s flagship PSU series expands upon its already remarkable design for the Dark Power Pro 12 by adding compliance to Intel’s ATX 3.0 design standard. Furthermore, a frameless fan with a complete mesh fan grill and fully digital control of LLC, PFC, and SR using full bridge topology are all highlights of Dark Power Pro 13.

The question that has been woggling in my mind is that with its completely modular architecture, single-sleeved wires, and beautiful aluminum housing, this power supply unit could be an excellent pick for high-end systems both now and in the future, but could it pass our rigorous testing at Tech4Gamers, let’s find out.

Packaging and Unboxing

The cardboard box that my Dark Power Pro 13 1300w came in was both elegant and simple. For a premium PSU from a trusted brand like be quiet!, the packaging is right on target. Coated to give the impression of velvet, the outside of the box is almost entirely simple, reflecting the minimalist aesthetic of its manufacturer. In addition to the high-density packing foam that protects the PSU, the box is very heavy and multi-layered.

The outside packaging for the Dark Power Pro 13 1300w PSU includes a sleeve that displays specs and a QR code that provides a comprehensive overview. Removing the top half of the box and sleeve shows remarkable workmanship. Inside, you can see all the cables neatly arranged on the right side. On the left side, you can see the Dark Power Pro 13 1300w ATX 3.0 PSU, covered in a protective fabric sleeve, which is the main attraction.

The accessories that come with it show that Be Quiet has opted to complement the Dark Power Pro 13 1300w and completes the PSU admirably. be quiet! provides an extensive set of extras with Dark Power Pro 13. The set includes everything from a complete set of cable combs to the Overclock key connector PCI slot covering bracket, hexagonal head Phillips screws, four standard mounting screws and four thumbscrews, zip ties, and ten cable straps printed with the be quiet name.

Surprisingly, plastic cable management combs can really make cable management a lot easier to manage, and you guys can be a bit artistic in routing those cables however you like. After taking the cables out of their packaging, you’ll see that the majority of them are black in color, with black connectors and wires that are individually wrapped. This is the only PSU I have tested so far that comes with 2 12VHPWR connectors. Both of them are the only ones that don’t follow this pattern.

They are standard black cables with an outside nylon sleeve. I would have loved to see these cables as individually sleeved braided cables as well. Having an AC cable was essential for a PSU with such a high output, as it may exceed the current capacity of conventional C13 connections when the input voltage is 115V or below. The 24-pin ATX connection and all of the DC power cables are detachable thanks to the Dark Power Pro 13’s completely modular architecture.

You can activate or deactivate the “overclocking” option using the PCI slot switch. While turned off, the PSU keeps an eye out for overcurrent on each of its several virtual 12V rails. When turned on, it treats the whole 12V line as a single rail. Thus, the power supply unit won’t trip if even a single connection uses a little more power than it should. Problematically, the second mode is unable to detect single-wire critical failures, which may cause an enormous current to flow across a single wire, permanently destroying it. In exchange for more overclocking options, there is a little compromise in product safety.

Design

This PSU has one of the sturdiest designs that I have ever seen. It is unique compared to other PSUs in the market. However, it seems that more attention was given to the outside rather than the inside because an outdated CWT platform, which is not commonly used in the market anymore, was used.

CWT has already shifted to a newer platform, but they only modified the older design for this PSU to comply with the ATX 3.0 standards. The reason behind this is that be quiet! wanted to implement their fan in this PSU due to its frameless design, which is directly mounted on the top of the PCB. For this reason, the fan needed a bigger platform to be attached to, which made the overall size of the PSU massive.

After taking the Dark Power Pro 13 1300w PSU out of its packaging, you can see a spotless black brushed metal surface on top of the chassis. It has a brushed metal surface on both sides. The distinctive aluminum chassis of the Dark Power Pro 13 series maintains the same sharp edges and exceptionally soft brushed surfaces as its predecessor. Its dimensions of 86 x 175 x 150mm make it somewhat longer than a typical ATX power supply unit. However, with a big enough PC case, this shouldn’t be an issue, but with a smaller build, it might be a problem.

On one side of the PSU, you can see the chrome-lettered logos of the brand and the series. On the other side, you can see a label that lists the electrical parameters and certifications of the PSU along with the output data. Right above it, you can see tiny representations of the series and the manufacturer.

Lastly, there is a big power button on the back of the device, just below the AC power cord connection that you can use to turn it on and off, along with a heavy-duty rectangular-shaped NEMA 5-15P to IEC 60320 C19 cable, measuring slightly more than 4 feet in total length are located on the power input side. Furthermore, the Dark Power Pro 13 1300w is rated to run at 100-240Vac. Once again, note that there are a total of six 12V rails, the last two of which are powered by 55A each.

The Dark Power Pro 13’s modular cable connections, as one would imagine, take up the whole front side. Beginning on the left side, the 12V1 rail supplies power to the HDDs, SSDs, and peripherals through a set of six inputs called DRIVES. Furthermore, the OCK input, which enables the installation of a switch in a PCI slot to produce a single, massive 12V rail for much improved overclocking stability, is the next input that is becoming increasingly common for be quiet!.

Underneath and to the right side of the OCK input are the two separate motherboard connectors, organized in a 20 by 8-pin layout. Moreover, two P8 CPU cable inputs are located underneath the 8-pin motherboard connector and, by default, work on the second 12V rail. 12V3 and 12V4 are two more 12V rails that distribute PCIe power.

Finally, 12V5 and 12V6 were the labels for the two inputs of the two PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR 600-watt cables, each with its own 12V rail. The SATA/Molex cables used by be quiet!! have a straight 5-pin connection, the CPU cables have a dual-row 10-pin connector, and the PCI Express cables have a dual-row 12-pin connector. 

Each connector’s corresponding virtual 12 V rail can be found in the printed legend. Considering the speed at which the overcurrent protection would activate in the event of an incident and how likely it is to prevent catastrophic damage, this design achieves its purpose admirably in terms of reliability as well as security. However, there are some drawbacks to consider.

For example, powerful components may not be able to reach their full overclocking capability because of the restricted maximum power per connection. Also, the Dark Power Pro’s default mode has numerous 12V OCP rails, so if the load isn’t balanced, the PSU will shut down. So, users should be cautious not to connect cable connections randomly but according to the manual’s instructions.

Fan

Let’s additionally take a moment to admire the 135mm fan’s mesh fan intake before we disassemble the Dark Power Pro 13 1300w PSU. Notably, the two shroud sections of the Dark Power Pro 13, like with previous Dark Power models, help guide airflow to the most critical components of the PSU, namely the three premium Japanese capacitors. Most of the time, be quiet! uses its own fans to cool its PSUs. The same case applies to the Dark Power Pro 13 as well. 

It makes use of a SilentWings 135mm fan that has been modified to remove the frame. Therefore, the fluid-dynamic bearing allows these fans to run quietly and reliably for a long time. Remarkably, the 135 mm fan can reach an astonishingly high speed of 2600 RPM on just .56A of power, which is rather remarkable considering its small size. Moreover, the fan and the PSU body were fine-tuned by the company’s experts to reduce vibrations and maximize airflow. Overall, I think this strategy which be quiet! executes on its Dark Power Pro PSU line, is fantastic.

First and foremost, dismantling this PSU proved to be a formidable task, given its intricate design, and I couldn’t complete the teardown entirely due to safety concerns. be quiet! has executed an exceptional design with this colossal PSU, collaborating with CWT to modify their platform to accommodate the be quiet!’s Silent Wings 135mm fan, enhancing airflow for optimized and silent operation.

However, this modification significantly increases its size compared to more compact designs offered by other brands, which could impact convenience and ease of installation. A potential improvement lies in BeQuiet reconsidering the design of its PSU shroud/chassis, providing an opportunity to incorporate CWT’s latest and most capable ATX3.0 platforms. The current platform appears to be a bit older and somewhat lagging behind.

The bridge rectifier and interleaved PFC’s MOSFETs share a robust heatsink. Furthermore, an NTC thermistor, accompanied by its bypass relay and a MOV for protection against power surges, is neatly enclosed in heat shrink tubing. In the full-bridge topology, four MOSFETs reside on a separate heatsink.

 

Moreover, the PSU also features a DC-DC converter dedicated to the minor 5V and 3.3V rails. Additionally, two meticulously crafted transformers are employed, a strategy often seen in higher-wattage PSUs to evenly distribute heat. However, this approach may lead to slightly more voltage ripples if not meticulously engineered.

Last but not least, to ensure longevity, the PSU incorporates primary capacitors from Nippon-Chemicon, exclusively using 100% Japanese-branded top-tier capacitors. Coupled with improved cooling, this configuration suggests a potential durability that could endure for an extended period.

How Did We Test Dark Power Pro 13 1300W

Although voltage regulation is not particularly impressive according to most professional PSU reviewers, including myself, it is not bad either. However, it did not meet my expectations given that, nowadays, ATX 3.0 PSUs with much lower costs are providing better results in this test. Nonetheless, an end-user will not encounter any issues as tight voltage regulation primarily indicates how well-designed a PSU really is.

PSU Efficiency & Temperature

PSU is efficient enough for a Titanium efficiency. We only tested this unit at 240V AC, hence why the efficiency numbers are even better compared to 120V AC. Almost all the high-end PSUs are now shifting to a much improved Totem Pole design & bridgeless topology using GaN MOSFETs for even greater efficiency numbers and extremely lower ripple performance. We would love to see BeQueit refresh this series with similar design changes.

Voltage Ripple Performance

The voltage ripple is well-managed, but we were not impressed with the result, considering its price and features that are primarily attractive to overclocking enthusiasts. CWT’s latest design is now being adopted by several other brands, and it achieves slightly better figures in this test without being heavier on your wallet or in your hands (due to its compact size).

Temperatures

The PSU has a massive size platform that provides adequate cooling space, resulting in excellent temperature control. Owing to the fact that all components are properly spaced and wired. The frameless fan used in this PSU is highly efficient and cools every component effectively. Plus, all heatsinks are adequate, leading to a low exhaust temperature. However, the only concern is that the side of the connectors reached a temperature of 53.1 degrees Celsius, which is slightly concerning. This is not a significant issue since the PSU is pulling 1300W, and the temperature can go that high.

Should You Buy the Dark Power Pro 13 1300W?

Buy It If

That’s because the Dark Power Pro 13 1300W is designed with a frameless fan and Silent Wings 135mm fan technology. This combination allows for efficient cooling with minimal noise.

Don’t Buy It If

❌You are on a tight budget: While the Dark Power Pro 13 1300W offers advanced features, the price may be a limiting factor for users seeking more budget-friendly options.

❌You prefer a compact PSU: If you prioritize a compact PSU design for compatibility with a wide range of chassis sizes, other options with a more space-efficient form factor might be more suitable for your build.

The cooler boasts an aggressive yet elegant design with backlit ARCTIC branding at the top, flanked by backlit diffusers on either side. The user-facing side showcases a sleek aesthetic, concealing the aluminum heatsink and fans beneath a visually appealing exterior. Below the branding, carefully designed cutouts ensure ventilation.

The identical layout on both sides reveals the jointed assembly of aluminum fins, providing a glimpse of the high-quality construction. The central portion features another ARCTIC branding, contributing to a well-executed and thoughtfully planned overall design.

Taking a look at the bottom of the cooler, we find a protective sheet on the base. The base is nickel-coated with the cables coming out from the opening on the mid-section.

The removable central portion of the housing is easily detachable by pulling the bottom ends on both sides. The 140mm P series fan with 5 blades is fixed to the frame, featuring a black ring frame attached to the cooler’s housing. The back of the fan reveals a 4-arm assembly holding the motor and blades.

Connect the 140mm fan’s 4-pin PWM connector and socket to merge control with the 120mm fan. This allows a single control through the motherboard’s 4-pin PWM header. Note: Only the 140mm fan speed will be displayed due to different rated speeds. The cable length is approximately 210+82mm.

Additionally, sync and control the cooler’s lighting by connecting the 3-pin A-RGB cable to the motherboard’s A-RGB header using the motherboard’s software. The A-RGB cable has a length of approximately 348mm.

There are 13 A-RGB LEDs installed on the ARCTIC Freezer 50 Review cooler. Now that we have removed the central panel, let’s take a look at the top of the heatsink. We have 6 copper heat pipes terminating alternately on the top of both towers, with no color coating on the fin stack or heat pipes. V-shape notches on the front of both towers reduce airflow resistance and noise. Additionally, the backside of the front tower has a plain layout, contrasting with the backside of the rear tower.

ARCTIC Freezer 50 Review has 52 aluminum fins per tower making a total of 104 fins. The fins are joined from the sides.

The image above displays the curved fin design at the rear of the cooler, with the entire area exposed to effective exhaust. Furthermore, it illustrates the displacement of the nickel-plated copper heat pipes inside the tower.

The ARCTIC Freezer 50 is equipped with 6 nickel-plated copper heat pipes, each boasting a 6mm thickness. Moreover, the mounting plate comes pre-installed on the base, featuring a spring-loaded screw on each side for added convenience.

The ARCTIC Freezer 50 utilizes continuous direct contact technology, incorporating nickel-plated heat pipes for direct CPU contact. The base, about 40x36mm, has a non-mirror finish. It employs two P-fans in a push-pull configuration. Combining a 120 mm and a 140 mm fan leads to an increase in airflow for improved cooling while keeping the noise level and the installation height down.

Arctic Freezer Installation

The cooler is tested on the AMD AM4 socket using X570 AORUS PRO WIFI

Here are the steps needed for the installation of this socket.

  1. Remove the stock retention brackets on the motherboard. Install 4x AMD standoffs on the mounting holes.
  2. Place the mounting brackets as shown in the picture.
  3. Use the thumb nuts and secure the brackets on the stock AMD backplate. Take off the center panel from the cooler. Peel off the protective cover from the base. Apply the thermal paste on the CPU.
  4. Place the cooler on the CPU by aligning the spring-loaded screws on the base plate with the threaded sockets on the brackets and start screwing.
  5. Put it back on the center panel. Make sure it sits fully and locks in at the tip of the sides.
  6. Daisy chain the 4-pin PWM connectors and connect them to a single fan header on the motherboard. You can also connect both fans individually.
  7. Connect the SATA cable of the PSU to the control box and connect the 3-pin A-RGB cable with the control box. Alternatively, you can connect the 3-pin A-RGB cable to the 5V header of the motherboard. The mounting bracket is sitting that close to the capacitors to my discomfort.

Arctic Cooling freezer Clearance

The height of the cooler is 166mm. Keep this in mind while planning your build with respect to the PC Chassis as the chassis should have support for CPU cooler’s height of a minimum of 167mm or so.

The cooler has a RAM clearance of only 31.7mm. Unfortunately, we can’t adjust the height of the fan to make the room as the fan itself is not an issue but the tip of the underside frame. This is a compromise one has to make for this ARCTIC Freezer 50 cooler. The RAM with an inset in the center can be installed with this cooler. I was able to install only one stick of ADATA XPG Spectrix D41. Fortunately, the cooler does not block the first PCIe slot.

Arctic Cooling Freezer A-RGB Lighting

The 13 A-RGB LEDs installed in the Freezer 50 are autonomously controllable. Freezer 50 is compatible with the common A-RGB standards of leading motherboard manufacturers or via an external controller. There are 15 lighting modes from the A-RGB controller. Here are some pictures:

We are using Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste for coolers testing. Using the same thermal paste for all coolers would ensure standardization. We are reporting absolute temperature in the graph. The testing is done on an open-air bench system. Once inside the chassis, the temperatures are expected to rise and would largely depend upon the optimal airflow inside the chassis.

Not every run of the stress test may yield the same result. This could well be due to many factors like mounting pressure, thermal paste application, varying ambient temperature, the temperature sensor of the die. Not to mention the silicon differences even among the same category of the chips. Hence, it is pertinent to mention the testing methodology along with the specifics.

Boi o boi! We have a new winner here as the Freezer 50 manages to beat the NH-D15 by 1°C margin but at a bit an elevated noise level. The ambient temperature was in the range of 19.6°C to 19.9°C.

The sound meter was showing the noise level to be 48 dB(A) with an ambient sound level of 32 dB(A).

Should You Buy It?

After testing, I was able to list a few points that should consider before purchasing the cooler.

There are four memory chips on the left side and four on the right side. There is a single thin thermal pad running across the entire length of the heat spreader.

Available in multiple 8GB modules, these kits maintain a minimum 8GB capacity to control costs. Ranging from 2666MHz to 4133MHz, our 8GB kit features a base frequency of PC4-17000 (2133MHz) with timings at 15-15-15-35 and 1.20V. The rated specifications are 16-16-16-39 at PC4-21300 (2666MHz) and 1.20V. In my experience, most DDR4 modules do not come with a chip in the middle of the PCB and that also rings true for this one. They have adopted a hexagonal design for the heat spreaders. Each module measures 133.3×45.8x8mm (LxHxW), emphasizing the importance of considering module height in relation to CPU cooler clearance. The bold yet pleasant design of the heat spreaders adds to the overall aesthetic appeal.

The aluminum heat spreaders feature pointy edges, grooves, curves, and a central XPG logo on a sleek black rhombus. The Tungsten Gray color adds sophistication, but the heat spreaders don’t span the full PCB length, leaving it at a 30mm height. Unfortunately, a sticker on one side disrupts the kit’s overall aesthetic.

This sticker has XPG branding on the leftmost side in black color which makes the appearance of the sticker pleasant in person. Part No of the kit is printed on the top of the sticker which is AX4U266638G16-DT41. Warranty voids in case this sticker is removed.

Let’s take a look at the top of the modules where all the lighting magic comes from.

There is a white color translucent diffuser on the top with a length of 113mm. It does not run across the entire length of the PCB but has a reference from the heat spreaders.

In my opinion, the unique diffuser stands out by featuring varying widths, with 8mm at the center and 5mm at the edges along its length. Synchronously designed with the heat spreader’s top half, it incorporates sharp angular turns on the 17mm edges, resulting in a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing overall look.

Featuring 5 individually controllable RGB LED zones beneath the diffuser, the XPG RGB software allows personalized lighting control. Notably, the top side of the heat spreaders showcases four triangular cutouts at the extreme ends, offering a glimpse of the diffuser’s illumination. This is a wise design to spread the light not only from the top but from these cutouts as well. But they sever another person as we observed during our testing.

The overall lighting of the kit can be affected by the strong surrounding lighting solution inside the chassis. In our case the fully brightened CableMod Wide Beam RGB LED strip was making this kit look less bright with uneven light distribution on the diffuser. As the red color seemed to be an orange accent, blue was light blue.

But the lighting coming from these cutouts was in full and original color to which the kit was set at, confirming that it is not the kit but the powerful surrounding lighting that is impacting. As soon as we turned off the CableMod strip, we could see evenly distributed lighting on the diffuser with original colors in full swing.

These kits use Samsung B-Dies which makes them offer utmost performance. The package is a standard monolithic 78-ball FBGA. Die Density is 8 Gb B-Die (20 nm) with a composition of 1024M x8 (64M x8 x16 banks). This kit is XMP 2.0 certified with 16-16-16-39-55 at 1.20V at 1333MHz. This kit has only one XMP profile stored on it. Some kits reportedly use two XMP profiles on them for better cross-platform compatibility.

Adata XPG RGB Lighting And Software

Before proceeding to our testing section, let’s talk about the RGB lighting effects on this kit as this is a primary aspect of these modules in addition to the performance. We tested lighting on the Asus ROG Maximus X Hero motherboard with pre-installed Asus AURA Sync software. While AURA Sync allowed overall control, it lacked individual memory modules and lighting zone customization

Attempting to use XPG RGB software alongside AURA Sync proved problematic, leading us to uninstall AURA Sync. XPG RGB software functioned seamlessly, featuring a similar interface with an ‘XPG’ logo on the top left, a Close button on the right, and On/Off buttons below it. Lighting can be turned off completely by clicking on this button and can be turned back on using the same button.

We have made a demo video of the lighting effects. We have yet to horn out video editing skills so bear with us on this one. It may not do the justice of how good the lighting effects on this kit are but would give you an idea about it.

Here is how it looks.

X99 Testing

We have tested this drive on the X99 platform. The test bench setup is as follow:

  • Intel i7 6850k
  • Asus RO Rampage V Edition 10
  • Open Loop Setup using Swiftech/Alphacool items
  • Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
  • Seagate 2TB Barracuda
  • Colorful iGame GTX 1050Ti
  • Corsair AX1200i

We conducted performance tests on the memory kit using AIDA64 Extreme and SiSoftware Sandra suite. Initially tested at default 2133MHz and with XMP, we attempted overclocking with a BCLK of 125 and CPU Strap at 125, but our system didn’t respond, so we reverted to a manual overclock.

With XMP, DRAM timings and voltages adhered to the manufacturer’s specifications. Using BIOS version 1703 on the Asus motherboard with a maximum frequency support of 3333MHz (OC), we successfully overclocked the kit to 3400MHz with relaxed timings. Starting at 2800MHz and 1.35V with timings of 16-16-16-39, we progressively increased the frequency.

3000MHz at 1.40V with 16-16-16-39 was successful. Attempting 3200MHz with the same timings failed, but relaxing to CAS 17 at the same voltage succeeded. Trying 3400MHz with CL 18 also proved successful. Beyond this, due to platform restrictions, further overclocking was not possible. The achieved 734MHz above the rated speed of 2666MHz demonstrates the kit’s notable overclocking potential. Now, let’s delve into the results.

We ran the AIDA64 on all above-described frequencies which are 2133MHz, rated 2666MHz, and overclocked 3400MHz.

You are working with a compact build: While a decent boost was noticed during overclocking, anyone looking for a faster out-of-the-box experience might not be interested in this kit.

Conclusion

The ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D41, showcased at PAX 2018, features vivid RGB lighting compatible with major motherboard lighting solutions. Design-wise, the black PCB with ICs on both sides follows a standard design, and our single-sided kit uses 4 Samsung chips on each side, with no central chip on the PCB. The aluminum heat spreaders sport a bold design with pointy edges, grooves, and curves, forming a medallion-like center.

This design repeats on both sides. A 113mm white translucent diffuser sits on top, referenced by the spreaders. Five RGB zones below, controlled via XPG RGB software, create even lighting. Triangular cutouts at the spreaders’ ends showcase the diffuser, and the XPG branding, without a logo, leaves a positive impression.

While the XPG RGB software offers 12 lighting modes, compatibility issues with Asus AURA Sync led to the removal of AURA Sync installation. The lighting zones, each with five zones per module, provide versatile customization. The Adata XPG Spectrix D41 kit showcases truly impressive RGB effects, significantly enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. We were particularly impressed with the captivating lighting effects displayed by these kits. 

We also got a 734MHz boost over the effective speed of the Adata XPG Spectrix D41 kit. Samsung B-Die was definitely doing a wonderful job here making this kit one heck of a performer. Achieving 3000MHz with 16-16-16-39 timings is notable, suggesting potential for more, though limited by our X99 motherboard’s maximum supported frequency of 3333MHz (OC). These kits carry a limited lifetime warranty.

These 288-pin DDR4 modules boast a non-ECC, Unbuffered DIMM design and are tested for reliability and compatibility on both Intel and AMD platforms.

Before proceeding further, I would like to clarify one thing: the Legend edition and RGB edition come in Gold, white, and Black color heat spreaders with ARGB lighting on top. There is a single-color LED edition as well in the black color variant with Red, White, and Blue LEDs. The kit we have is NIGHT HAWK RGB in black color heat spreader.

XMP 2.0 readiness is guaranteed. The sleek black heat spreader on the front side extends outward, following the exclusive Hawkeyes concept with a battle totem design, leaving the PCB exposed at the sides and bottom. Though, in my personal opinion, the first look at these would remind one of the Batman logo! Whichever it is, it looks that fine in person though this design is making this particular RAM a high-profile design.

The heat spreaders are securely attached to the PCB with removable screws using an Allen key. The top part features a distinctive design with an orange borderline below the diffuser lining, created through an extrusion process with CNC machining for a symmetric hawk wings style. T Force kits exhibit a robust build, emphasizing the quality of the heat spreaders’ casting and application.

WARNING: Prioritize compatibility with your motherboard and adhere to manufacturer specifications when choosing the best RAM for your system to avoid potential performance issues or hardware damage.

White “RGB” is printed at an angle on the left side, followed by a white T-Force logo in the center, and “NIGHTHAWK” in white on the right side. This design contributes to an appealing and cohesive look for the module.  I appreciate the overall layout and flow of the design. RGB logo is actually confirming that we have the RGB version of the NIGHTHAWK DDR4 kit.

The backside of the module is identical to the front side except that there is a sticker on the lower right side with the part number, timing, speed, and voltage of the kit printed on it. Removing the sticker would void the warranty. The serial number is also printed on the sticker.

The RGB LED diffuser runs the full length of the module, contrasted by heat spreader cutouts, resulting in a sleek and unobstructed design. With two slits per half side for RGB illumination, totaling four slots per side, the overall aesthetic of the module is significantly enhanced.

The module dimensions are 53x147x9mm (HxLxW), with a total height of 53mm, including the 288-pin connector. Consider this when selecting a CPU cooler to ensure the RGB-enabled modules remain visible and unobstructed. Similarly, a 9mm width may obstruct the block of the AIO cooler with the tube side facing the DIMM slots. This is so as the majority of the RAM modules have an overall 7mm or so thickness.

T Force RGB Ram is following the JEDEC Association’s latest RC 2.0 circuit configuration. T-Force is mentioning these kits to be using an ultra-low voltage of 1.2~1.4V with 40% energy saving. I believe this is in comparison with the DDR3 protocol as DDR4 kits are operating between 1.2V to 1.5V with a typical of 1.35V on the majority of the kits.

PRO TIP: When choosing RAM modules, consider low-profile options if you are working with larger CPU coolers to ensure a seamless fit within your system.

The transmitting signal of PCB on these kits is up by 35%. There is almost no interference between power and signal as the distance between the power layer on the PCB is increased as compared to the signal layer on the PCB. This would help in overclocking with sustained performance.

RGB Lighting

Speaking of the RGB Illumination, the NIGHTHAWK RGB series DDR4 kits are compatible with:

As can be seen, the luminous lighting on the NIGHTHAWK RGB is fully compatible with almost all of the RGB-enabled solutions from various manufacturers. I have tested the kit on GIGABYTE Z490 AORUS PRO AX and MSI MAG Z490 TOMAHAWK.

Kits were read by the RGB FUSION 2 and MYSTIC LIGHT SYNC applications and controlling the RGB lighting was an easier task. This would also allow for color coordination for the themed builds and using the motherboard’s light control application would reduce the need for using multiple RGB lighting control software.

It is important to take a look at the top of the modules since this is the side that will be evidently more visible to the user/gamer than the sides. There is a translucent diffuser on the top which runs across the entire length of the PCB. But it is covered in the middle as the mid-section has a recess to compliment the layout. The diffuser is thicker in the middle as compared to the thin design on the ends.

It seems like TEAMGROUP has focused more on the sides for RGB illumination than on the top but again that was the design element requirement. There are 10 RGB LEDs under the diffuser. The lighting is fluid, vivid, and most importantly, it is done in an even manner as I did not observe any spillover. It is also bright enough not to be disturbed by the surrounding lights.

The T-Force Night Hawk RGB 16GB kit utilizes Hynix C-Die with a monolithic 78-ball FBGA package. The die density is 8 Gb C-Die (18 nm), featuring 1024M x8 (64Mb x8 x16 banks). XMP 2.0 certified, it operates at 3200MHz with timings of 16-18-18-38-56 at 1.35V. The SPD transfer rate is 2400MHz, and the Hynix chips are identified by the part number H5AN8G8NCJR-UHC. Notably, these kits lack a thermal sensor found in kits with Samsung B-Die.

T-Force RGB 16 GB Ram Testing

I have used a T-Force 16GB kit on a new Intel test bench based on the 10th generation Core i7 10700k. Here is the configuration:

We are thankful to our sponsors for this test bench; Intel and MSI. The kit has been tested using AIDA64 Extreme, Performance Test, and SiSoftware Sandra suite. XMP was loaded for the tests. The CPU was on Stock, Auto settings including the voltage and core clocks. The kit was overclocked manually. The XMP loaded the manufacturer’s rated DRAM timings and Voltages.

Since T-Force is the first kit on our new test bench, there is no comparison at the moment in the graphs. It will be done in the coming time with more kits. I loaded the XMP and then set the primary timings manually in the UEFI/BIOS. This was done to lock the timings so that BIOS wouldn’t change the timing by manually overclocking the frequency of the kit.

PRO TIP: During overclocking, gradually increase frequencies and test stability at each step, keeping an eye on temperatures.

In my initial attempt, I boosted the frequency to 3600MHz with the same 16-18-18-38 timings at 1.40V DRAM voltage, enhancing CAS latency at higher speeds. Pushing further to 4000MHz required VCCIO and VCCSA voltages at 1.35V and 1.40V. For stability, I adjusted timings to 17-19-19-40 above 3600MHz and 18-20-20-45 for 4000MHz, recognizing that further timing relaxation might be necessary for optimal stability.

The above is a CPU-Z screenshot showing the RAM at various frequencies. The maximum I was able to hit was 4000MHz at 1.40V DRAM voltage which is quite a boost.

Should You Buy It?

Buy It If:

✅You want a capable DDR4 kit: Its rated frequency of 3200 MHz makes it a reasonably fast kit that is perfect for anyone who owns a DDR4-compatible board.

✅You prefer RGB lighting: The implementation of RGB on the T Force Night Hawk RGB 16GB is one of the best in the business.

✅You want overclocking headroom: In our experience, there is a decent amount of overclocking headroom on the T Force Night Hawk RGB 16GB.

Don’t Buy It If:

❌You want better RAM clearance: With its height of 53mm, compatibility with air CPU coolers can be an issue.

Conclusion

We were sent the T Force Nighthawk RGB Ram for Review. We have employed the kit on our newly established test bench featuring the Intel i7 10700k and MSI MAG Z490. Design-wise, the kit boasts a futuristic Hawkeyes aesthetic with a battle totem design enhanced by vibrant RGB illumination. The black heat spreader, adorned with white and orange accents, creates a bold and cool appearance, seamlessly complementing the overall layout and design.  

The hawk eyes more seem to me like a Batman logo but that is my personal opinion. The heat spreader is die-cast from aluminum material using the extrusion process and computed aided CNC machining work to produce the impeccable product. The quality of the kit is evident! The dimension of a module is 147x53x9mm (LxHxW). The 53mm height of the kit may impact compatibility with CPU air coolers, potentially obstructing the view of the modules.

Additionally, the 9mm width could pose challenges for AIO coolers with tubes near DIMM slots, a concern mitigated by using a 2-module configuration. When it comes to performance, I was able to push the T-Force Night Hawk RGB 16GB to 4000MHz frequency at CL18 using 1.40V for the DRAM. The VCCIO and VCCSA needed tinkering as well to achieve this overclocking with a significant performance boost.

In my opinion, the T-Force Night Hawk RGB 16GB 3200 MHz black kit is positioned fairly in the current market, considering it also includes a lifetime warranty from TEAMGROUP. Gratitude to test bench sponsors Intel and MSI.

Performance: The RAM kit undoubtedly has outstanding performance because of its RAM size and memory speeds. During my testing, I could complete CPU-intensive tasks such as video rendering much quicker than with other RAM kits. Moreover, I also noticed a spike in FPS during my gaming tests.

Overclocking Potential: Moving to its overclocking potential, unfortunately, the RAM doesn’t offer lots of overclocking capabilities, and I could barely increase the frequency even with a greater voltage output. However, I did expect this much from a value RAM kit.

Performance: Being on the budget end, the TEAMGROUP Elite DDR5 RAM kit only has a 4,800MHz frequency with loose CL40 timings. However, during my performance testing, the RAM did not bottleneck the Ryzen 9 7950X CPU and instead provided decent performance at 4K resolution.

Overclocking Potential: The TEAMGROUP Elite DDR5 RAM kit doesn’t have any overclocking potential because it doesn’t utilize a heatsink. During my overclocking tests, the RAM became unstable easily, and I could only achieve a ~150MHz stable increment.

Design and Build Quality: The front side of the motherboard has a partly uncovered PCB, with most of it sheltered under metallic shielding. The M.2 slots are also shielded with a continuing covered design all over the lower side of the mainboard. The backside of the motherboard is, however, exposed and not covered with any kind of backplate.

Performance: The 16 Duet Rail Power System and 6-layer PCB with 2oz thickened copper don’t let the quality of this motherboard be miscalculated. As the Alder Lake processors can draw quite a bit of power, the 2x 8-pin EPS power connectors were a nice forethought to add.
