Marvel’s Blade Has Been In Development For Almost 2 Years

Fingers Crossed For Launch In 2025 or 2026?

Story Highlights
  • Marvel’s Blade was announced last week.
  • The title will be developed by Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Dishonored.
  • A LinkedIn profile reveals early work on this project started in January 2022.

The announcement of Marvel’s Blade was one of the major moments that caused a buzz at The Game Awards 2023 despite the event falling short of many people’s expectations.

Marvel’s Blade is being developed through a partnership between Marvel and Arkane Lyon. The latter has created games like Deathloop recently, making it a big name in the AAA industry.

Following the announcement from last week, we have learned Arkane Lyon has been working on this project for 2 years.

Why it matters: While many projects are revealed too early, forcing fans to wait for many years, this Marvel adaptation might be released within the next few years.

The campaign director for Arkane Lyon, Dana Nightingale, notes on her LinkedIn profile that the game has been in development at the studio for just under two years.

According to her portfolio, early work on the game began in January 2022, making it likely that Marvel’s Blade is no longer in pre-production like many initially expected when Bethesda’s recent blog post claimed that it had just begun development.

In September 2021, Arkane Lyon wrapped up work on Deathloop. After the game was released for the PS5, more content and updates were released, but the team’s core focus had likely shifted to this Marvel project by that time.

This is fantastic news since it suggests that the developers may already be quite far along in the game’s development. With several years of work done, a vertical slice of gameplay could also be showcased sooner than expected.

For now, not much is known about Marvel’s Blade. Apart from an art style resembling Deathloop, fans have not been able to get much out of the short teaser, but Arkane Lyon has confirmed a single-player adventure set in Paris.

Additionally, while there were doubts about the game’s exclusivity, Xbox just published the trailer on its channel, indicating that Marvel’s Blade could become a competitor to PlayStation’s slate of Marvel superhero games.

It will be interesting to see how Xbox transitions into the superhero space. If successful, this project could spur more collaborations with Marvel, allowing both Xbox and PlayStation to engage in heated competition for superhero games.

Marvel is also more focused on games than before. Numerous projects from both Marvel and DC are in development, and we might just be in the golden era of superhero games.

With a total of 7 major games in the works, we can expect plenty of exciting releases. Among the current list, Marvel’s Blade appears to be one of the better games revealed so far, thanks to Arkane Lyon’s reputation as a talented studio.
