Being relatively new to the competition, Acer has been pushing innovative GPU cooler designs to the market. However, it’s not easy to innovate over the traditional cooling solution, which has been working quite well.
When Acer launched its first custom design at Computex in May of this year, based on the Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090, it was widely regarded as a major surprise. This marked Acer’s first entry into the fiercely competitive OEM graphics card industry.
However, KitGuru’s initial evaluation of the Acer Predator Geforce RTX 4090 Spearhead and the graphics card’s hybrid cooling design was incredibly disappointing, creating an overall impression that was rather subpar.
Among all the models tested, the Acer Predator GeForce RTX 4090 Spearhead performs the worst when it comes to GPU and GDDR6X temperature measurements despite having a very large heat sink with integrated all-in-one water cooling.
Still, the operating temperature of the Acer Predator GeForce RTX 4090 Spearhead does not pose a problem for the graphics processor or the GDDR6X graphics memory since these temperatures at the high end are acceptable for a 450W GPU.
However, the graphics card is by far the loudest model in the test field, maxing out at a dB(A) of 44, revealing just how inefficient Acer’s new hybrid cooling design is. It seems the fans are working quite hard at pushing air through the large surface area of the radiator.
Given that this is Acer’s first liquid-cooled hybrid solution, more adjustments and improvements are needed to make it a practical choice for future offerings.
Acer provided a unique solution to a problem that has already seen better options like dedicated all-in-one coolers. While some may, therefore, consider it unnecessary, we hope the next model with such cooling produces better thermals and acoustics.
With EVGA, one of the best AIB partners, out of the game, Acer might now be trying to gain that position. However, it looks like the company needs to gain a lot of experience in the new field before going for the higher-end market.
